Memorial Day Service @ Kansas Veterans Cemetery

The Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Riley-Manhattan will honor fallen veterans and their loved ones on Monday, May 29th at 11:00 am at 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, (near the Manhattan Airport).  this year’s program will feature guest speaker Robert Boyd, Jr., the Little Apple Chorus and the Kansas Territorial Pipes and Drums.  Please bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on as seating usually fills up quickly.  This event, as always, is free and open to the public.

Fort Riley Memorial Day Observance @ Post Cemetery

The annual Memorial Day ceremony at Fort Riley takes place on Monday, May 29th at 11:40 am at the Post Cemetery.  The observance honors the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces.  Fort Riley and 1st Infantry Division Acting Senior Commander Brig. Gen. Patrick Frank will provide remarks.  The ceremony is open to the public; however, those without a Department of Defense ID card need to arrive early at the Henry Gate visitor control center (Exit 301 of I-70) to obtain a pass to the installation.

Tree Planting Ceremony @ Habitat Home

It is the tradition of the Great Plains Society of American Foresters to offer their blessings to Habitat for Humanity families by sponsoring the cost and planting of trees at new Habitat for Humanity home sites.  On Saturday, June 3rd, at 2:00 pm, members of Great Plains Society of American Foresters (GPSAF) will lead a tree planting ceremony at the Habitat for Humanity home of Ernest and Kayla Wilhoite, at 1026 Yuma.  A butterfly magnolia, has been selected by the Wilhoite’s to be planted in the back yard.

Kandango @ Blue Earth Plaza

Kandango is 3 1/2 days of bicycle rides on the back roads of Kansas.  It originated in 2013, as a tour through the Flint and Smoky Hills regions of Kansas.  Its central themes are to ride the road less traveled (but far more interesting), take the time to explore the pass-through communities and see the local attractions during the ride.  The 2017 event is June 8-11.  Paved and gravel routes from Manhattan are available each day.  Camping and lodging packages in Manhattan are available.  For more information go to www.ridekandango.com.

Chicken Dinner @ Sacred Heart Parish

Paxico Sacred Heart Parish will have a Chicken Dinner on Sunday, June 11th from 12:00 to 3:30 pm with Buffet Style Serving.  Mass will be at 10:30 am.  They will also have Bingo/Games/Raffles and a Silent Auction at the dinner.  Adults – $10.00; Ages 5 thru 12 – $4.00 and Ages 4 and under – FREE.  This event will be held at the Parish Hall located 1 1/2 miles north of Paxico.

Everyday Heroes Bootcamp @ Manhattan Public Library

2017 Sunflower State Games

The 28th annual Sunflower State Games will be held July 14th – 30th.  The Sunflower State Games is Kansas’ largest amateur sports festival.  With over 45 different events there is something for people of all ages and skill levels.  In 2017 they will be adding Cornhole (Bags) and Drone Racing to the list of events.  Registration for the Sunflower State Games opens on March 1st, deadlines to register vary for each sport.  Complete event information and registration procedures can be found at www.sunflowergames.com.
