The Building of the Tuttle Creek Dam @ Manhattan Public Library

A free educational program,  The Building of the Tuttle Creek Dam, will be held on Sunday, April 30th, at 2:00 pm at the Manhattan Public Library.  This program will give a review of and the arguments pro and con for its building.  Slides will show the building of the Dam from beginning to the end.  Kevin Larson is a native Riley Countian, a fourth year generation resident.  He taught Social Studies at Riley County High School for over forty years.  This program is sponsored by Riley County Genealogical Society.  For more information call 785-565-6495 or  This is free and open to the public.

Hymn Festival @ First United Methodist Church

Noted church musician and composer, John Behnke will lead a Hymn Festival at the First United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 30th at 3:30 pm.  The church is located at 612 Poyntz Avenue.  The theme of the event will be “From Ashes to Fire” and will explore Lenten, Easter, and Pentecost hymn arrangements by Dr. Behnke.  This is a free event.  The public is invited to attend.

National Day of Prayer

Manhattan House of Prayer invites the Church in the Manhattan Region to the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 4th, at 7:00 pm at 328 Poyntz Avenue.  The House of Prayer will be open from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm for personal prayer or meditation on this day.  Praying together for a Revived Church and Nation.

Walk Kansas @ Johnson Cancer Research Center

Walk Kansas, a statewide health initiative presented by K-State Research and Extension, will hold its second Walk Kansas 5K for the Fight and 1.5-mile fun walk Saturday, May 6th, to benefit the Johnson Cancer Research Center at Kansas State University.  It is open to everyone, not just Walk Kansas program participants.  The event, which will include a 50-yard kids’ fun run, will take place outside the Johnson Research Center at Chalmers Hall on the university’s campus, 1711 Claflin Road.  Check-in will be at 7:45 to 8:45 am.  The 5K will start at 9:00 am and 1/5-mile fun walk will start a few minutes later.  Online registration is at, or a brochure with registration form can be downloaded at, where route maps and parking information are also available.

Ostomy Support Group @ Via Christi Hospital

A Ostomy Support Group will be meeting on Tuesday, May 9th, from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at Via Christi Hospital Community Room on the first floor.  If you or a family member are living with a colostomy, ileostomy or a urinary diversion, you are not alone.  Join Callea Beiner, a nurse practitioner who is certified in ostomy care from Surgical Associates, for an evening of education and sharing.  Via Christi Educational Services – 785-587-4513.

2017 Sunflower State Games

The 28th annual Sunflower State Games will be held July 14th – 30th.  The Sunflower State Games is Kansas’ largest amateur sports festival.  With over 45 different events there is something for people of all ages and skill levels.  In 2017 they will be adding Cornhole (Bags) and Drone Racing to the list of events.  Registration for the Sunflower State Games opens on March 1st, deadlines to register vary for each sport.  Complete event information and registration procedures can be found at
