USD 383 Head Start, which serves the Manhattan, Ogden, and Riley County School districts, is accepting applications for the 2017-2018 school year. Head Start is a free, federally funded preschool program that serves families with low income. To apply, a child must be 3 years old by August 31st, 2017 but not yet kindergarten age eligible. The Manhattan Book Discussion Group and the VIP (Visually Impaired Persons) Support Group will meet on Tuesday, May 16th, at the Riley County Senior Center. The Book Group will meet at 1:00. The title this month is “Dead Wake” by Erik Larson. The VIP meeting will follow from 2:00-3:00 pm. Join them for Game Day. Have you ever wanted to participate in a game but your low vision has held you back? Have you wondered what the game Bunko was like? Now is your chance to learn more. This will be the “Game Day” meeting. They will be joined by Bunko enthusiast from the Riley County Senior Center. Join them as they help guide you through this fun-filled game. The Riley County Historical Museum, 2309 Claflin Road, will present the lunchtime lecture “Manhattan Memories” Thursday, May 18th at 11:30 am. A lifelong resident, Margery Davidson will talk about some of her “Manhattan Memories” and family stories. Margery’s family came to Manhattan in 1871. She will illustrate her family stories with objects from the collection of the Riley County Historical Society and Museum. The program in free and everyone is invited to attend. Irwin Army Community Hospital will host a Summer Safety Day event Friday, May 19th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in front of IACH’S main entrance near the flagpole. This event is to promote spring and summer safety for soldiers, families, veterans, civilian employees and local community. Visitors are encouraged to access the public parking structure through the lower levels during the event. IACH Summer Safety Day is free and open to the public. Lunch is available for purchase.
The Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Ft. Riley-Manhattan will honor fallen veterans and their loved ones on Monday, May 29th at 11:00 am at 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, (near the Manhattan Airport). this year’s program will feature guest speaker Robert Boyd, Jr., the Little Apple Chorus and the Kansas Territorial Pipes and Drums. Please bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on as seating usually fills up quickly. This event, as always, is free and open to the public.
