Wildcat Creek Watershed Idea Workshop @ City Commission Room

To make the strongest application possible for the NDRC Grant, KDA, the Flint Hills Regional Council,  the City of Manhattan will be hosting an “Idea Workshop” on Thursday, August 27th at 7:00 pm in the City Commission Room.  This workshop will include facilitated discussions in small group settings on topics such as specific flood prone areas, and what activities and amenities could occur in the area.

RCLA Summer Tour @ Alcove Cattle Company

The annual Riley County Livestock Association Summer Tour will be held on Sunday, August 30th, starting at 5:00 pm at Alcove Cattle Company, located just south of Blue Rapids, Ks.  Tour hosts Ken and Zita Duensing will provide a tour their purebred Angus operation, including a look at the entrance to the abandoned gypsum mine on their property.  The ranch headquarters is located in a beautiful setting, near Alcove Springs.  To reach the tour site, travel straight south of Blue Rapids on Main Street, then follow the signs leading to the Alcove Cattle Company.  A free supper provided by the Riley County Livestock Association will be served following the tour.  Food and table service are provided, but participants are asked to bring their lawn chairs.  Reservations to attend the RCLA Summer Tour are needed by Wednesday, August 26th.  Register online at or call the Riley County Extension Office at 785-537-6350.

Local Food & Farm Task Force Meeting @ Kansas Department of Agriculture

The Local Food and Farm Task Force will meet at 10:00 am on Monday, August 31st.  The meeting will include a presentation from Kansas State University College of Agriculture Dean John Floros.  The Task force is responsible for preparing a local food and farm plan containing policy and funding recommendations in order in increase locally grown food production.  The meeting is open to the public.  Individuals who have questions regarding the meeting should contact KDA marketing director, Kerry Wefald at
