K-State’s Movies on the Grass – at the Zoo – will be held on Thursday, September 3rd. Enjoy a free screening of Project Wild Thing, a hilarious real-life story about one man’s determination to get children out and into nature. Plus, from 5 to 8 pm, guests will enjoy fee Zoo admission.
Kansas’ agricultural trademark program, From the Land of Kansas, invites tailgaters to participate in the second annual From the Land of Kansas Tailgate Contest. The contest presented by Manhattan HyVee, will be held on Saturday, September 5th, prior to the Kansas State University vs. South Dakota football game. Tailgate contest participants are challenged to create dishes featuring Kansas ingredients. The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Tuttle Creek Lake invites the public to attend a Control Tower Tour on Saturday, September 5th, at 1:30 pm. The tour is open to U S Citizens and attendees must sign up at the Corps of Engineers Project office before the day of the tour. There are only 20 spots available, so sign up today. Steve Prockish and Jordan McGuinn, Park Rangers at Tuttle Creek Lake, will conduct the program. Attendees will learn about the history of the dam and how the tower operates. Please be advised that backpacks and purses are not allowed on the tower. Photographs are not permitted in the tower, so please leave cameras and cell phones in vehicles. Grandparents’ & Enrichment Day will be held at the Zoo on Sunday, September 6th from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Grandparents admitted free this day with a paid child’s admission. Plus, tour the animal exhibits to see firsthand how keepers use enrichment to ensure our animal collection stays active and healthy.
There will be a Coffee and Conversation with Local Elected Officials on Saturday, September 12th from 9:30 (coffee) to 11:30 am at the College Avenue United Methodist Church New Community Room. This will be an opportunity to talk to our local school board members, mayor, city commissioners and county commissioners….the individuals who guide our community. The format will be a round-robin. The meeting is free and open to the public.
The Color Run Manhattan takes place at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday, September 12th, with runners being released on the course in waves between 9:00 am and 9:45 am. Each participant gets a 2-15 Shine participant kit, including a designer T-shirt, shimmer tri-color headband, finisher medal, Shine and color packs, and gold foil tattoo. Additional ticketing fees apply upon registraion.
Relay for Life of Riley County will be held on Friday, September 25th from 5:00 to 11:00 pm. Opening Ceremony and Survivor Lap will be at 6:00 pm at the Manhattan City Park. The Relay for Life event is an opportunity to honor, support and remember those who have fought or are fighting the battle against cancer. The fire department and police department will be doing a BBQ cook-off contest. There will be a bounce house, face painting, sno cones, and so much more! Since it is at the city park, dogs are allowed. The theme for the relay this year is “Lights, Camera, Relay” which means everyone is encouraged to dress up like their favorite movie character. The Body First School Fitness Challenge is a fun run for local area schools to participate in and win money to give back to their school’s physical education program. This event has donated $46,500 to the physical education programs at area schools since 2008 and is expected to raise $12,000 in 2015.
