USD 383 Head Start, which serves the Manhattan, Ogden, and Riley County School districts, is accepting applications for the 2017-2018 school year. Head Start is a free, federally funded preschool program that serves families with low income. To apply, a child must be 3 years old by August 31st, 2017 but not yet kindergarten age eligible. The 3rd Annual Wildcat Warrior 5K will be held on Saturday, April 22nd at the General Richard B Myers Hall, Kansas State University. Registration: 8:00 am. 5K Start: 9:00 am. Fun Run Start: 10:00 am. $30 – 5K/ghost Runners; $25 — Per Team Participant (4 runners per team); $15 — Fun Run (1 Mile). Local Masonic Lodges are hosting two free cancer screening events on Saturday, April 22nd. The first one is from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at 621 Humboldt Street in Manhattan and the second is from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at 519 Lincoln Avenue in Wamego. The screenings are free and open to the public. The events include skin and prostate screenings as well as Screen-to-Save colon cancer risk assessments – with free home screening kits for those who qualify. In addition, bone density tests and facial sun damage assessments will be available, along with mammography services from Diagnostic Imaging Services. Mammography services may incur a fee.
