The Wamego City Commission approved a Charter Ordinance amending storm water utility fees.  At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page went over the provisions of the new ordinance and said the staff looked at this several years ago and identified areas that needed modification by looking at the revenue side.  He said the staff determined the residential rates were adequate, so created a 5-tier rate for non-residential property based on the square footage of the lot.  The rates range from $5.50 per month to a maximum rate of $27.50 for a lot over 40,000 square feet.

Page said a Charter Ordinance is a different animal and is subject to public petition.  After the ordinance is approved by the Commission, it is published in the newspaper, and if no petition is filed on the 60th day after the initial filing, it becomes law on the 61st. day.  Page added the staff’s goal was to have the least financial impact, so they backed into the rates.  A motion was made to accept the ordinance and it passed by a vote of 5 to 0.
