United States Coast Guard Band @ City Park

The United States Coast Guard Band, under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Adam R Williamson, will present a free concert on Wednesday, July 26th at 7:30 pm at the Larry Norvell Band Shell in City Park.  This event is open to the public.  No tickets required.

Furniture Amnesty Day @ City Park
Jul 28 @ 7:00 am – 4:00 pm

Furniture Amnesty Day is an annual event that allows local residents to donate furniture they no longer need so others can select from the donated goods for free.  The 2017 event is scheduled for Friday, July 28th in City Park.  To donate, you can drop off your furniture between 7 am and 4 pm on the day of the event in City Park. Or, if you live in Manhattan city limits, you can have your donation picked up.  You must fill out the online form or call 785-587-2404 by 5 pm July 26th to be on the collection route.  Furniture needs to be on the curb by 7 am July 28th.  Volunteers cannot assist with getting the furniture out of your home.  If you would like to select from the donated furniture, you’ll need to participate in the public sign-in, which begins at 8 am July 28th.  You will be able to choose from available time slots between noon and 4 pm.  Each household will be allowed to select 5 pieces of furniture.  You will need your own form of transportation to get the selected furniture to your home.

American Legion Dance @ American Legion Post 17

Sons of the American Legion Post 17 will have a dance on Saturday, July 29th from 7:00 – 10:00 pm in support of Friends of the Peace Memorial Auditorium.  Proceeds will benefit the Restoration of the Peace Memorial Auditorium.

German Youth Symphony @ CL Hoover Opera House

The Ahrensburg Youth Symphony Orchestra will spend 4 days in Manhattan from July 29th-August 2nd.  Recognized as the leading youth orchestra in Northern Germany, the 63 member ensemble’s schedule will include performances at the CL Hoover Opera House in Junction City on Sunday, July 30th at 2:30 pm and KSU’s McCain Auditorium at 7:30 pm on Monday, July 31st.  These performances are free and open to the public.  The orchestra will be interacting with students from the Manhattan and Junction City Public School Orchestra Programs and the Manhattan based Gold Orchestra.

Free Cancer Screenings @ Dwight Library & Community Center

Local Masons are hosting free cancer screenings during Dwight’s Summerfest on Saturday, August 5th.  It will be held from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Dwight Library & Community Center.  The event is open to the public and will include free skin and prostrate cancer screenings, colon cancer home screening kits as well as BMI tests and facial sun damage assessments.  Diagnostic Imaging Center mammography services will also be available at the event.  Cost of a mammogram is covered for those who quality through the Early Detection Works program or have insurance coverage.  Otherwise, a fee may apply.  Participants can call 913-344-9989 to learn more or to pre-schedule a mammogram for August 5th.
