Lorde's hit "Royals" has been #1 for four weeks in the U.S., but over in the U.K., it's just hit the chart -- and debuted at #1. Billboard reports that the 16-year-old New Zealand singer/songwriter is the youngest solo artist in 15 years to enter the British singles chart at #1.
Prior to Lorde's success, the record was held by British actress Billie Piper, who under the name Billie hit #1 in 1998 at age 15 with a song called "Because We Want To." These days, Piper is best known for her roles on Doctor Who and Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
Lorde will turn 17 next month.
Meanwhile, Katy Perry's new album PRISM has debuted at #1 on the British album chart, and is expected to do the same in the U.S.
