The Wamego City Commission adopts resolutions and Charter Ordinances.  At Tuesday’s meeting, City Manager Merl Page presented a resolution to update the list of the City’s equipment and the rates charged to other public agencies.  The ordinance also covers the average wages paid for use of the equipment.  The motion passed by a vote of 5 to 0.

 In other business, the Commission passed two Charter Ordinances covering City Elections after the State of Kansas changed the election laws.  Pages said to be in compliance, the City has to change some of the election dates.  According to City Attorney Jake Pugh, the Kansas Legislature moved all the April elections to November to coincide with other State and National elections.  He said the law also changes the terms of the City and County elected officials, which will now coincide with other State and National elected official’s terms.

 The second Charter Ordinance deals with filling commissioner vacancies by reason of resignation, death, or removal from office.   The new Charter Ordinance reinstates the procedures for filling vacancies that were done in 1969, where the Mayor chooses a replacement with the consent of the remaining Commissioners until the next election for that office.  Both Charter Ordinances were voted on separately and passed by a vote of 5 to 0.

City Manager Merl Page asked for a motion to approve the purchase of a new Police vehicle, a 2016 Dodge Durango, from Nemaha Valley Motors for a net cost of $22,250 after trade, plus $400 for an additional set of remote start keys.  Page said they try to do an annual rotation of the Police vehicle fleet, and had budgeted $30,000 for this purchase.  Approval was given by a vote of 5 to 0.

 In other business, the Commission approved the fundraiser, Running for Others, scheduled for April 23rd, to start at 8:30 a.m.  Page said this is the third year for this fundraiser, and the funds are used to assist indigent families pay for medical related and other expenses.  A 5K and Kids run is planned.

 In his City Manager reports,

  • Page announced the new Power Plant is scheduled for certification next week.

  • The Annual Chamber meeting will be January 30th at the Columbian Theatre.

  •  The Annual Leader’s Retreat  is scheduled for January 22nd and 23rd.

  • Page announced the resignation of Building Official Mac Campbell on February 26th after 9 years of service.  Mac is retiring to pursue other interests.

  • Page said Sales Tax finished the year strong, with City-wide up 1 point 8 percent, and County-wide finishing up 1 point 54 percent.
