The festivities at Blue Earth Plaza continue this weekend after the holiday season in Manhattan was kicked off with the lighting of the Festival of Lights tree.

Saturday, December 1, the Festival of Lights 6th Christmas Carnival officially opens. Organized by Whoville, Inc., the festivities include train as well as horse-drawn carriage rides, a virtual reality sleigh ride, in addition to cookie decorating and other crafts in heated tents. Manhattan Fire will also be at the event with an engine on-site.

Santa Claus will be available for free photo opportunities with kids and there will also be a judged ice-sculpting competition with the top three sculptures winning cash prizes. The public will also have a vote for a crowd favorite.

There will be free food from AJ’s NY Pizzeria, Hy-Vee, popcorn and hot cocoa.

The event starts at 11 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.
