Emergency crews were busy in Junction City Monday morning and over the weekend, according to a press release from the Junction City Fire Department.
Monday morning just after 6:32 a.m., the JCFD responded to 1310 Overbrook Dr. Upon arrival crews found a wood frame bi level with nothing showing. The occupant had extinguished the fire upon arrival of JCFD crews. The occupant stated he smelled smoke after getting out of the shower, coming down the hallway and that the smoke detector activated. He told the JCFD that he’d seen flames in the dining room window and that he started throwing water on the fire. The occupant’s wife then went outside and used the water hose and extinguished the fire on the outside. Salvage and overhaul then started. Siding below the window was removed as well as some of the deck boards. Cause of the fire is believed to be discarded smoking materials.
On Friday a vehicle fire occurred between 331 and 339 West 14th St. at approximately 10:30 a.m. The vehicle was fully involved when fire crews arrived and the fire began to spread to two adjacent houses.
Evidence and witness statements determined that the fire occurred under the hood of the vehicle parked between the two residences. The fire was determined to be accidental and the possibility of mechanical failure of the vehicle could not be ruled out.
Also on Friday at approximately 5 p.m., a second fire occurred at Commonwealth Drive by Fuller Circle. This fire was intentional in nature and set in an overgrown vacant lot that was set ablaze. An accelerant was used and the Junction City Police Department is investigating.
