A towering figure in Manhattan has returned to prominence. On Friday September 20th in City Park a reopening of the famous Johnny Caw Statue was held. A speaker at the event was Manhattan Mayor Mike Dodson who said no tax dollars were used on the project.

The project cost nearly 300,000$ and was raised by the “Friends of Johnny Kaw”. The legend of Johnny Kaw was created by a K-State professor in 1955. Dodson believes that the citizens of Manhattan are lucky to have an icon like Johnny Kaw.

Former Mayor of Manhattan Kansas Ed Klimek spoke to a crowd at City Park Friday September 20th at the commemoration of the refurbished Johnny Caw statue. Improvements made to the statue include pictures and educational plaques that give information about the Johnny Caw statue. The project was privately funded tax dollars were not used. Klimek thinks the statue gives Manhattan residents something to be proud of.

The fundraising effort was led by the Friends of Johnny Caw. A community came together to restore an icon. Friday September 20th at City Park the Johnny Caw statue was reopened after being refurbished. City Commissioner Wynn Butler says the costs were completely covered by fundraising and volunteer work.

The event also had other speakers there like Mayor Mike Dodson and former Mayor Ed Klimek who also spoke at the event. Butler believes that tax dollars are not always necessary to accomplish tasks.
