MANHATTAN — Riley County Police spent close to $64,000 in personnel funds to staff the areas around Aggieville March 2 for this year’s annual Fake Patty’s Day.

That included a total of 1,869 hours of employee labor, according to RCPD Captain Richard Fink.

      Fink 1869 hours

The total cost was $63,915. Fink says they aren’t charged by outside agencies who assisted with extra enforcement, noting a “handshake agreement” in place between other law enforcement agencies.

Police responded to 172 calls for service during Fake Patty’s Day, including 39 arrests, 19 of which were for DUI’s and six for disorderly conduct.

Also during the Law Board meeting Monday, a general order was approved that governs how the law board disciplines officers for misconduct and behavioral issues.

The revision comes in disciplinary actions and the various penalty codes for a first, second and third offense as well as a reckoning period. RCPD Director Dennis Butler says converting suspensions to hours instead of days made more sense.

      Butler change to hours

For example, a first offense punishment previously would have been for up to a three day suspension. The Law Board’s approval changes that to 24 hours. Similarly a three to five day suspension under the old policy is now a 24 to 40 hour suspension. Longer penalties are imposed for different penalty codes and second and third offenses and include reckoning periods of one to two years and in the most severe case, dismissal.

Offenses not specifically included in the department’s policy manual would result in penalties similar to those specified for listed offenses of comparable seriousness.

At Monday’s Law Board Meeting, multiple officers received Life Saving Awards and Meritorious Service Awards for events that occurred during August and September 2018. Congratulations to all!
