Sunset Zoo welcomes holiday season with 2nd annual Santa’s Luminary Trail

The second annual Santa’s Luminary Trail saw hundreds of people flock to the Sunset Zoo over the weekend.

Held Saturday and Sunday, the annual event invited families into the zoo for a host of holiday-themed activities, including a lighted path at night and a visit from Santa Claus. People were invited to walk along a  lighted trail at the zoo to participate in a number of indoor activities. Families were able to have their picture taken with Santa Claus. Due to the interactive activities with animals, storytelling and a number of arts and crafts booths for kids, the event was well attended..

Sunset Zoo Marketing Development Officer Melissa Kirkwood says there were over 400 people at the first night of activities Saturday. Kirkwood acknowledged some differences between the event this year and last year.

“It’s probably a little bit more family friendly with lots of hands on activities, We do that everyday here at the zoo with our clubs and programs,” she said.

One such hands-on activity saw attendees getting to touch an African snake and the opportunity to hold a beetle. Another positive about the event was the community involvement.

“I think it is a way to bring families and the community together,” Kirkwood said.

Several zoo animals including tortoises and meerkats were also on hand both nights.
