Aaron Estabrook, independent candidate for the District I seat of the Riley County Commission, had his petition rejected last week. Estabrook said 195 of the signatures he collected were thrown out, bringing him to 320 accepted petition signatures – short of the 408 required to be included on the November ballot.

Riley County Clerk Rich Vargo spoke with KMAN and said the signatures thrown out were “not legal signatures.”

Vargo said that some of Estabrook’s signatures were from people who “either weren’t registered voters or weren’t in the right district — they could have been registered voters in the wrong district.”

He also said there were duplicate signatures on Estabrook’s petition and some of the names, addresses and signatures were illegible.

“If we can’t read them, we can’t count them,” said Vargo.

Estabrook will be meeting with county election officials to discuss the situation at 4 p.m. on Monday.

As a result, Republican John Ford will be the sole name on the ballot for the District I seat currently held by Commissioner Ben Wilson.

Estabrook could still mount a write-in campaign for the county seat.
