MANHATTAN — The Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education held a special work session Wednesday with Kansas lawmakers regarding some of the issues they hope to see brought up in the upcoming legislative session. The full meeting can be viewed below.

One of the questions was related to improving school safety in Kansas. 66th District Representative Sydney Carlin had some praise for the district’s active shooter drill held over the summer.

Carlin says the district should be proud for evolving their drills with the new dangers schools are facing. 67th District Representative Tom Phillips shared his thoughts on the issue.

Phillips also commended the board on their school safety efforts in the bond. State Senator Tom Hawk says lawmakers also need to look at some other factors.

The board also asked the legislators on the possibility of rewriting the funding formula and the state economy. Phillips was quick to respond.

Phillips says he is open to ideas. Hawk told board members that the current formula is working.

Carlin says the state legislature can meet the needs of schools this year and next year, but is unsure about the future beyond that.

Area lawmakers will be appearing over the next week on KMAN’s In Focus, including Ron Highland on Dec. 21, Carlin and Phillips will both appear on Dec. 26.
